Page Rank

What is a website Page Rank? Page Rank value start from PR 0 to PR 10.

PR 10 is the higher, it's for the top popular worldwide sites, while PR 0 is for sites with low traffic, not popular, and probably with a lack of basic SEO.

The Page Rank value is based on a linking analysis, but also by some complicated algorithms to determinate a website reputation and popularity. A site having some backlinks from high PR and valuable websites who're getting millions of daily visitors, will see its page rank going up quickly, while a website having few backlinks in some low traffic sites will get his PR boosted very slowly.

Page Rank (PR) and Search Engine Result Page (SERP) are different, lets compare two websites with the same subject: on a search engine result, a website with a low PR can be in front of another one with a higher PR. A high page rank is more likely to show that many people are interrested about the website, and for online marketing purposes, your site is then interesting.

In fact, different factors apply to get a high PR, but lets see how backlinks and algorithm are working:

There are different kind of link you can get for your website:
-A one way backlink (another website links to your site without backlink)
-The reciprocal links (you exchange links with other webmasters)
-The three way linking ( three sites are linking to each other without link exchange)

Note that the your site page rank will gain in value if you have a link with the 'dofollow' attribute, it tells the search engine to follow this link for the PR value, while links with the 'nofollow' attribute are telling the SE not to consider this link for the PR value.

Below, we can see an exemple of two websites giving a one way link to a third one. Having these kind of backlinks from high PR sites can increase your website PR. If the back links are from low PR sites, it is good also, as you get a part of these site's page rank value.
Site 1 and 2 are giving a one way link to the third website. Both sites 1 and 2 are giving their page rank importance to the site 3:

See how work Links and Page Rank ratio with this simple exemple exposed with images and explications:
In the exemple below, we have 4 websites:
Site 1 has two "reciprocal" links, and gives a "one way" link.
Site 2 has a "one way" link and, gives two "one way" links.
Site 3 has a "reciprocal" link, and two "one way" links.
Site 4 has a "reciprocal" link, a "one way" link he's getting, and giving a "one way" link.

Now let's understand which website will get a higher page rank, and the ones who'll get a low impact on their site's PR statut.

We can see the ranking from the most advantaged site about PR change, and how can it be affected: The king is the site 3.

See next shema to check the page rank ratio distribution for both four websites.

In this schema below, we'll analyse the PR ratio a website can give to another one for increasing the page rank. Note the site number three and the number one, and analyse the PR ratio exchanged by the linking process.
Here is an example with four different websites exchanging links with a page rank importance ratio of 1/2, 1/3 and 1:
Page rank ratio whith backlinks

 -The site 1 is getting: 1 + 1/2 = 1.5 and giving: 1/3 + 1/3 + 1/3 = 1, so its PR has increased by 0.5 (1.5 - 1).
-The site 2 is getting: 1/3 and giving 1/2 + 1/2 = 1, the site is losing approximately 0.67 of its PR value (0.33 - 1).
-The site 3 is getting a PR ratio of: 1/2 + 1/3 + 1/3 which is approximately 1.16, and giving: 1. The site Three has its page rank increased by: 0.16 (1.16 - 1 = 0.16).
-The site 4 is getting: 1/3 + 1/2 = 0.83 and giving 1/2 + 1/2 = 1, the site is losing approximately 0.17 of its PR value (0.83 - 1).

Suppose we have a list of eight websites, all with a correct page rank. Below is a schema showing a high impact linking value who'll boost efficiently a website PR, an exemple if all sites are giving a single one way backlink.
-The site number two is getting 1 from both the sites four and five: 1 + 1 = 2.
-The site three is getting 1 from both the sites six, seven and eight: 1 + 1 + 1 = 3.
-The number one is getting 1 from both sites two and three: 1 + 1 = 2.
Note that in this shema, each website is giving only a "one way" link (exept site 1).

With these simple explications, we are not showing some complicated mathematic algorithms, but just a simple and easy way to understand how links can increase your website page rank, or drop it. The images and linking schemas shown are representing websites exchanging links, and the page rank value a website can gain or loose. A cool and easy way to understand how Links and PR ratio are working.
